ASHLEY YIN WILLISON
LA CARAVANA
How does one enjoy art, let alone anything, in complete isolation? For many, homes become ruminating space of reflection and often, depression. I've spent the last twenty five years figuring out that I cannot create alone. What a great thing to dedicate my life to - when a virus can make devised theatre seem completely null and void. In the space of solitude I found a yearning to be supported creatively by fellow creators and consumers of art.
What Caravana sought from day one was the power of joyful disruption and togetherness, no matter the situation. In process and performance we created unexpected happiness in a time of unexpected sadness. Within the given restrictions, myself and five others proceeded to carry out an in person devising and rehearsal process for two weeks. Everyday we met in the green space of Humboldthain park, singing and exercising our way into the devising mood. Slowly stories appeared featuring bikes and bodies, laughter and uninhibited joy. As bad news of the world whirled around us, the playful nonsense we created was doing its work as we found ways to support each other through our art. Even to a distant and perhaps unwilling audience, the energy invigorates like nothing else.
Togetherness is not impossible.
We refuse to be unhappy, we refuse to stop creation,
we refuse to let devised theatre be consumed by a situation
where it is needed the most.
This project is continuing through the summer months- bringing stories to parks all around Berlin.
