WHAT IS HAPPENING

Art is reactionary before it inspires.

My artistic practice reflects the state of the world: unpredictable and utterly complex.  The processes are not premeditated and there is often no foreseeable product or performance. This year I've meditated on metaphors to use for my artistic process (a la Janne Risum "The Crystal of Acting"). The first that struck me was the metaphor of cooking. How a meal is more than the flavor of it's component parts - its how hungry you are- whats in the fridge- what are your skills to prepare it - what time of day.

But this somewhat banal metaphor was eclipsed when I likened the creative process to liturgy- perhaps banal in it's own right, for liturgy is not abnormal. Liturgy is routine, it is never the same but usually boring. It is a template, an instinct that is repeated in various formations in hopes that the divine sauce will reach down and touch you at one point and then BAM - art is created. But the essence of liturgy, though different every service, remains the same. So amidst the confusion and flurry of life - where is the consistency in my practice? What are the axioms of belief that determine how I artistically react to the world? I set out to define these beliefs and pinpoint their origins.

The through-lines of my work are reflected in my manifesto. This is my current liturgy that keeps me creating, reacting, and evolving my art with the world.
